Google has recently released the Adaptive Connectivity Services app update which comes with version number p.2024.08. This update suggests that Google is reportedly preparing a new ‘Satellite SOS’ emergency feature for Pixel devices. This feature will allow you to message emergency services and tell them your location when you are unable to connect to a mobile network or Wi-Fi.
According to the information, this new Emergency feature of Satellite SOS comes under the Settings page, located at Settings / Security & Emergency / Satellite SOS, here is a description of how this feature works.
Call or text emergency services
- If you don’t have a mobile network, you’ll see an option to use Satellite SOS
Answer questions about the emergency
- Your answers will be sent to emergency services to get you the right help
Follow the steps to connect to the satellite
- Once connected, you can send messages to emergency services. You can also share your location in Google Maps.
Additionally, it features the ability to customize the information shared with emergency services and a link to purchase Garmin Search & Rescue insurance. The page also has a link to a support page with a list of supported countries, which is not working yet.
Although the description clearly refers to Pixel devices, it is unclear which devices will be supported. Additionally, the latest update to Google Messages adds a new SATELLITE_COMMUNICATION permission.
