Google Messages is improving its messaging service by introducing several new features, including a tool that allows users to create selfie GIF. The feature enables users to record animated GIFs of up to three seconds, similar to picking up photos from the gallery, directly within the messaging app.

To use the 3-second ‘selfie GIF’ feature of Google Messages, one needs to long press the camera icon in the message thread, which will bring up the camera viewfinder and gallery. Notably, the Selfie GIF option is separate from the app’s custom camera.
After activating this feature, a new UI is brought up with a circular camera frame. At this point, you’ll have the option to use your front or rear camera to record a three-second video that can be sent as a GIF to the recipient. There’s also a restart button if you want to try again.
Moreover, the recording process of a Selfie GIF with a countdown is very easy to guide users in Google Messages. Although there is no editing feature, users can start and restart recording manually. Completed GIFs are automatically saved to the user’s gallery, making sharing easy.
According to the report, the selfie GIF feature is already available, but the feature has not been widely released. It is expected that Google will soon make it available for Android users.
