Google bringing Gemini Nano AI to Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a

Gemini Nano is Google’s first commercial AI model for mobile devices. Pixel 8 Pro and even the Samsung Galaxy S24 series have Gemini Nano enabled by default. Now, Gemini Nano AI will be expanded to at least Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a smartphones with the feature drop in June 2024. However, the feature is not enabled by default like the Pixel 8 Pro.

At launch, Google confirmed that its Gemini Nano AI model is only supported on the Pixel 8 Pro. Later in March, Google took a U-turn and promised to release Gemini Nano by June 2024 for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a.

The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a already support some AI features powered by cloud processing. The Pixel phone must have an AI model like Gemini Nano installed, to enable an on-device AI feature experience. In a recent development, the Search tech giant updated Android AICore to add a toggle specifically for generative AI features on the Pixel 8 and 8a.

A Pixel 8 user via MishaalRahman got the updated toggle that shares how To enable Gemini Nano AI on Pixel 8 and 8a, go to Settings > System > Developer options > AICore Settings. This toggle “enable[ “enable on-device GenAI Features” toggle ] GenAI features that will run through AICore, using Gemini.”

Also, the toggle remains off by default, as Google has already confirmed that Gemini Nano will be an opt-device feature for the non-Pro models of the Pixel 8 series. This change is spotted in AICore version 0.release.pixel8.636144055.
