Qualcomm is here to make your Android updates easier

Qualcomm Android updates

Qualcomm is working on reducing the hassle of Android updates: Since still most of the people are Android users, it’s a necessity to have the updated version of Android. Over the past few years, Android OEMs have leveled up their work in this field by keeping older devices up to date with security patches and Android upgrades. Leading in the race are Samsung and Google offering seven years of support to some of their devices. Well, this is a remarkable change as a few years back companies were offering two years of support which was quite disappointing.

Sooner or Later, timely and extensive Android updates were a bit complex with bottlenecks from multiple sources, one of them being a machine chipset that is Qualcomm, MediaTek, Samsung, etc. Following the human tendencies the creator of those chipset used to move on from them as the chips got older and support from them went away, which might created problems for the OEMs to keep their devices up to date. Following the progress in the years, this has been a significant factor in devices that only receive one or two Android Updates or maybe sometimes no even one.

Luckey, Qualcomm has acknowledged the issue and is now working on it to make it easier for OEMs so that they can keep their devices up to date with the latest Android updates. Recently met Chris Patrick, SVP and General Manager of Handsets at Qualcomm, so in the meeting, he said that this is not only a significant concern for the company and that soon an announcement about something great will address the issue

Quoting him “ It is very complicated for a customer – an OEM– to get security updates, to get Android version updates, and then get it to every end user. It is actually very expensive and very complicated ”.

Aa Patrick was quick to point out and according to him, Qualcomm is not the main bottleneck for this problem, and also the company is working hardly on it to make it easier. Quoting him “ One of the things we have been working on for the past several years with Google and with the OEMs is to change the structure of inline code — to kind of change the machinery for how we do those updates. “

These changes should remove at least some of the friction OEMs face while keeping the devices up to date. Obviously removing one bottleneck clearly does not mean that OEMs will automatically meet the challenge created by Google and Samsung offering seven years of updates, but again it should solve some of the issues.

Even though Patrick said that this code optimization was in progress for years, the company clearly did their piece of work. He said, “ You all will see that, later on, this year, we will make some announcements about some of those changes we have made to facilitate this and help the whole ecosystem keep Android phones closer to up to date.“

This “ Later this year “ does not seem to be very specific, as of now only two major events are coming up in 2024 at which Qualcomm can make an announcement, one of which is the IFA in September and the other one is Snapdragon Summit in October. The former one is a large tech event that features brands from all over the globe, while the latter one is a Qualcomm specific  event which might see the debut of Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. Let’s just wait and watch.

Whatever happens, it will eventually it will result in Android phones staying safe for a much longer duration than too software-wise.
