Android 15 Beta 2 update rollout: Private Spaces and list of new features revealed

Android 15 Beta 2

At the Google I/O 2024 event on May 15, the company announced the rollout of Beta 2 for Android 15. The beta update is currently available for Pixel devices. This release arrives without the usual hype, as Google’s focus this year has been on Gemini-related AI updates.

As well as the beta 2 release for the Pixel, the Android 15 beta is now reaching “phones, tablets and foldable form non-Pixel” from partners including Honor, iQOO, Lenovo, Nothing, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Sharp, Tecno, Vivo, and Xiaomi.

According to Google’s release timeline, the next beta will arrive in June and the final beta will arrive in July, followed by the final public release. As before, if you want to install Android 15 beta on supported Pixels, all you need to do is visit this website and enroll or if you are already enrolled in Android 15. You will then receive the second beta in the form of an over-the-air software update.

Android 15 Beta 2 features and improvements:

Private Space

Android has long featured the ability to hide or lock away apps, but with Android 15, Google is expanding this by introducing a separate space on their device where they can keep sensitive apps away from prying eyes, under an additional layer of authentication inside the launcher called Private Space.

As detailed in the blog post, they can access these apps only through the selected lock method. If the location is locked, app profiles, including generated content and notifications, are hidden, so you won’t be bombarded with pushes and updates.

Better background task management for longer battery life

With Android 15 Beta 2, Google is also improving battery life across devices, at least at the developer level. Specifically, with the fresh beta, foreground apps and services will now have a pre-configured and shortened timeout after which these apps and services will be rolled into the background. After this, background apps perform specified tasks resulting in optimized performance and reduced power drawn by the method.

Better multitasking for tablets:

One new enhancement that specifically targets devices with larger screens is on the multitasking front. The latest beta version is adding support for taskbar and split-view apps that are pinned to the home screen for quick access. Plus, Android apps are more adaptive and bring edge-to-edge views, using free spaces more efficiently than before.
