A couple of weeks ago, Google released the Android 15 beta 3.1 update for Pixel devices, and the company is bringing lots of amazing features and one of them could be a ‘color correction slider’. For those who are colorblind, Android 15 introduces the ability to combine color correction modes with an intensity slider, a feature that has long been available in the accessibility settings of the user interface.

Android provides two red-green correction modes, deuteranomaly correction (for users who have trouble telling greens from reds) and protanomaly correction (for people who have trouble telling reds from greens), to address problems with red and green perception. To assist those who have trouble telling blue from green, Android also includes tritanomaly correction. In addition, there is a toggle to activate grayscale mode, which is helpful for those who are colorblind.
For those who are deuteranomaly, protanomaly, tritanomaly, or monochromacy, these color correction slider options adjust the color balance to improve color perception, which could come with Android 15. In the absence of these color-correcting options, some areas of programs, pictures, and other materials may have colors that colorblind persons may find too similar to see.
In order to help users preview the color balance adjustments before activating them system-wide, Android kindly includes a chart at the top of the color correction settings page that illustrates how colors are impacted by each mode.
Notable, this feature is still not present in the Android 15 beta 3.1 but you can find it manually via the Settings > Accessibility > Color and Motion page on Android to modify color correction explicitly. Through the various color correction options on Android, color-blind users can modify their degree of color blindness.

As you can see, the intensity slider has a significant impact on each color’s hue. Therefore, this slider may be able to help offset different degrees of protanomaly, tritanomaly, or deuteranomaly. More customization choices for Android’s color correction settings could benefit color-blind users who thought that the available options weren’t sufficient for their needs, as individual needs vary. I can’t speak for any of those users personally, but if you have a color vision impairment, please let us know if Android 15’s update would be beneficial to you!
