Google is aiming to allow third-party camera apps on Android to implement Ultra HDR. The ability to take pictures straight from a social network app or a third-party camera app will greatly enhance the user experience.

Google introduced Ultra HDR photography technology with Android 14. It’s a brand-new JPEG-based image format created by Google. The JPEG aids in the device’s ability to record both SDR and HDR renditions of the scene and display them in accordance with the hardware of the device.

Many third-party camera apps that support built-in cameras are now unable to take Ultra HDR photos. It will shortly be modified. It is anticipated that applications wishing to implement Ultra HDR functionality may make use of the Camera2 API, which powers the feature.

The picture can be viewed on any handset because it is in JPEG format. You will notice that colors are more vivid and contrasty if your smartphone has appropriate hardware (display). On the other hand, the same image will appear in SDR format for devices without hardware.

An HDR gain map is retained in the metadata of a JPEG file, allowing for the extension of Ultra HDR capability. The native camera of the app can be modified by third-party app developers to overlay an HDR gain map over the original SDR version of the image that is already there in the file.

The first apps to benefit from Ultra HDR functionality are those developed with Camera2API. Applications that rely on the CameraX API will have to wait for Google to implement that feature.

Some of the devices that display Ultra HDR photographs in their full glory include the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, Pixel 8, and Pixel 7 series. The CameraX platform update, which will support the Ultra HDR format, is expected to bring about a number of beneficial improvements for these handsets.
