Google drops support for Android Lollipop that is almost 10 years old

Do you remember the Android Lollipop? Android Lollipop (version 5.0) was launched at Google I/O in November 2014 and released via an over-the-air update five months later. It added a lot of great new features and quickly became a favorite of many Android users. However, ten years later, Google has announced that it is ending official support for Android 5.0 Lollipop.

As you might know, the first phone to come with Android Lollipop was the Nexus 6 manufactured by Motorola.

Today, news has come in about this older Android 5.0 Lollipop build that Google has officially discontinued support for it. This is happening with Google announcing that it will no longer continue to update Google Play Services for Android Lollipop (Android 5.0-5.1.1) devices.

Google says that Android 5.0-5.1.1 is used by less than 1% of active Android device owners. The purpose of dropping support for Android Lollipop is to allow Google engineers to focus on more current versions of the operating system that can run features still in use today.

“Android Lollipop was first released in November 2014, nearly 10 years ago and since then, we’ve introduced many innovative improvements and features for Android, which are unavailable on Lollipop. Today, we are discontinuing Google Play Services updates for Android Lollipop devices since they account for less than 1% of active Android devices. Lollipop devices will continue to function but won’t receive any new features, important security updates, and may not be compatible with some apps. We strongly encourage users to upgrade to newer Android versions for the latest features and security enhancements.”- Google statement.

This software support end doesn’t mean that your Android device running Lollipop will stop working. It means that you won’t get security updates, new features, and compatibility with some Google apps that require Google services.
