Google is readying an ‘App Mall’ for Chromebook

When Chromebooks debuted in 2012, their affordable price tags along with new features and improvements helped make personal computing more accessible. Google is launching a new App Mall for your Chromebook to help you find your next favorite app or game.

One interesting benefit of a Chromebook or ChromeOS tablet is that you get access to three different types of apps, including:

  • There are web apps that run within the built-in Chrome browser, many of which can be installed as PWAs.
  • Next, you’ll have entrance to the Google Play Store, which opens up a globe of Android apps.
  • High-end Chromebooks can install games via Steam.

Now in this recent development, you can also install a Linux development environment, which offers desktop-class programs like Android Studio.

The sad downside is that, sometimes, you can’t find all the apps in one place. Sometimes, you can find Android apps from the web and web apps from the Play Store, but this is not the case often. Meanwhile, unless you’re already familiar with that method, you’re unlikely to find many Linux apps to use.

To keep the problems at bay, Google is preparing to launch a dedicated “App Mall” to help Chromebook owners find new apps. According to the information, the ChromeOS “App Mall” will be locked behind a flag in chrome://flags during initial testing.

However, thankfully we will not have to change any flags to access the new App Mall. Under the hood, “app” will be a shortcut to a soon-to-launch website: search.apps.chrome. now this URL is not valid.
