The redesigned bottom bar in Google Maps for Android has been reduced to three primary tabs including :

  • Explore
  • You,
  • Contribute.

This is a shift from the previous layout, which consisted of five tabs.

  • Explore
  • Go
  • Saved
  • Contribute
  • Updates

With this update, the You tab has been expanded, now including the capabilities that were once found in the Go, Saved, and Update tabs. While the Explore and Contribute tabs are retained with their original positions. The new update aims to make the app more user-friendly by adding related features in one place.

The You tab houses the bookmark icons you see in the image below. Also, you can see that the search bar has been removed from the top of the screen, and users can now find notifications and messages in the top-right corner. The You tab bar will show alerts when required similar to the Updates tab.

However, Google Maps is still not using the taller Material You bottom bar or dynamic colors. Plus, it plans to add a new image carousel feature, like to Google Photos.
