Pixel phones will use processor made by TSMC

As you may know, since the launch of the first Pixel 6 phones with a Tensor chip, Google has always sourced its chips from Samsung. However, this will change next year with the Pixel 10 series processor, as Google is looking to switch to TSMC for more reliable quality and yield.

According to information from Chinese publication CTEE, the Google Pixel 10 series will feature the Tensor G5 processor built on TSMC 3nm process, which claims that Google’s first 3nm chip, the Tensor G5, has already been taped out by TSMC.

While the Pixel 9 series will use the Tensor G4 chip built on Samsung’s 4nm process node and Google has said that the Pixel 9 Pro smartphone will be launched on August 13.

The Tensor G5 will be Google’s first chip to be developed completely in-house, while previous chips were designed in collaboration with Samsung’s System LSI arm. With an in-house design and TSMC’s advanced 3nm process, the Tensor G5 is expected to offer huge improvements in performance and power efficiency compared to previous chips.

This is bad news for Samsung as big-name chip clients like Google, Nvidia, and Qualcomm are slowly moving away from Samsung foundries and towards TSMC. If you don’t already know, Taiwanese company TSMC is the world’s largest contract chip manufacturer.

Google introduced its first in-house Tensor chipset with the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro in 2021. Since then, the brand has partnered with Samsung for semiconductor manufacturing. Also, the Pixel 9 series will use the Tensor G4 processor manufactured by Samsung. Also, this report suggests that Google has finalized the design of the Tensor G5, and it is unlikely to change in the future.
