In the world, Netflix is one of the most powerful streaming services. But the company has not been easy for the last few years. To stay on top, the company has had to make several changes, including raising prices multiple times and cracking down on password sharing. Netflix introduced its biggest change two years after the start of the pandemic, to date with the addition of an ad-based tier. Now Netflix may be looking to take this ad-based experience a step further by introducing a free plan according to a new report.

In select markets primarily in Europe and Asia, the company is considering rolling out a free tier reported by Bloomberg. The company is just in early talks or maybe has yet to make any decision. In Kenya, the company actually experimented with a free option but discontinued it last year. We imagine compared to the paid experience, this free option would likely have a much more curated and limited selection.
As per the report, Netflix would focus on countries like Japan and Germany, the company isn`t aiming this new option at emerging markets this time around. Netflix is already reaching peak potential in the US with its current plans. That’s why the company isn’t interested in offering this plan in the US.

The idea would be to target markets where Netflix has yet to reach its subscriber potential including no easy means of payment or lack of affordability. For example, in Germany, credit cards aren’t nearly as common because Germany is still very much a cash society. This might make a free version much more appealing. A free plan for new customers who might potentially be interested in paid tiers could also lure them as they grow hooked on the Netflix experience.
This all remains speculative for now, but it doesn’t seem too far-fetched. When it comes to potential advertising dollars, Netflix likely sees that there’s a lot of money left on the table. If the company wants to maximize its profits even further it seems like a pretty natural extension.
