Not all Google Pixels have been flawless; sometimes, they have basic problems that last for multiple generations. Several well-known instances included the utilization of antiquated camera sensors, the absence of ultrawide cameras, uneven bezels, and abnormally sluggish charging rates. Fortunately, Google took care of all those instances in due course. Another persistent Pixel issue, the under-display fingerprint sensor modest lag, and occasionally erratic performance is expected to be resolved with the Pixel 9 series.

Android Authority has heard that Google intends to incorporate an ultrasonic fingerprint reader into its next smartphones, courtesy of a source with direct knowledge of the situation.
Google has employed conventional rear-mounted sensors until the Pixel 6, when it made the switch to under-display fingerprint scanners. Regretfully, the transition did not go well; early adopters complained about slow unlock times as well as unreliability in the scanning.
Although there was some improvement with the subsequent OTA updates and the next generation of Pixels, unlocking remained quite slow and still is. The fingerprint scanner that was chosen was the root of these issues. Google chose to use an optical scanner from Goodix, a business, whereas its rivals used ultrasonic scanners. Generally speaking, optical scanners are more sensitive to any moisture or dirt that may be on your finger, slower, and less precise.

Finally, Google is moving to an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner or sensor with the Pixel 9. The device in question is the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008), which is the precise type that is comparable to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. This is terrific news because Samsung devices have long had outstanding fingerprint scanners.
Although there are other factors that affect unlock speed and overall experience, an ultrasonic sensor will always outperform an optical sensor.
All Pixel 9 models will get the new ultrasonic fingerprint scanner; the Fold retains its fingerprint scanner in the power button. There isn’t much more to wait as Google has confirmed that the Pixel 9 series will launch on August 13.
