Switching between Google Photos and iCloud Photos to soon be easier

Together, Google and Apple have released a new tool that should make moving your pictures from Google Photos to iCloud Photos simpler. If this sounds familiar, it’s because in 2021 the two internet behemoths launched a program that accomplished the exact opposite: it moved iCloud Photos to Google Photos.

The transfer is a component of the Data Transfer Project, an open-source initiative that aims to provide mechanisms that guarantee the “integrity of a person’s data is intact when going from one service to another.” In light of this, the Data Transfer Project synchronizes data models, authentication, and additional components to enable simple and safe data transfer.

According to a Data Transfer Initiative blog post, the tool will be released within the course of the following week. The post included links to the help pages of Google and Apple, where users could get guides on transferring images and videos between the two platforms. Apple states on its support page that depending on the size of the data, the time required to move images and videos from Google Photos to iCloud Photos might range from a few hours to several days.

How to know it’s done?

Apple will send you a confirmation email once the migration is finished. The Photos app will contain transferred files in a new album called “Import from Google.” The files will also stay on your Google Photos, so in order to get them deleted, you’ll need to do the procedure manually.
