Threads for Android now supports Ultra HDR images

Google Pixel devices are able to upload and view Ultra HDR photos on Instagram. It’s part of Google’s March feature drop that has been released for supported Pixel 7, Pixel 8, and Pixel Fold phones, while the update will be released to US carriers in a few days. Now, it looks like Threads for Android now supports Ultra HDR image and 10-bit HDR video uploads and viewing of this content on selected Google Pixel hardware.

According to the official Play Store, the Threads app was last updated on March 8. As usual, the changelog only mentions bug fixes and “improved performance”. But the report claims that the latest March Pixel feature drop has confirmed that Ultra HDR images are now officially supported by Instagram, but it also appears that Threads, another Meta product, has quietly added support for the image format. Support added.

According to the report, Ultra HDR images and 10-bit HDR video content are currently supported on Threads on the Pixel 7, 7 Pro, Fold, 8, and 8 Pro. A compatible display is required, so older devices are not supported.

For your information, Ultra HDR images are not captured by Pixel devices by default, so uploading regular HDR images to threads will not look the same or function the same.

First, enable this feature on your device. To do this, open the Google Camera app > Settings > More settings > Advanced > Ultra HDR > turn on the toggle. For video uploads, open the Google Camera app > Settings > 10-bit HDR > toggle on. When shooting HDR video on a Pixel phone, you’re limited to 30fps at 1080p and 4K UHD.
