With billions of users globally, YouTube ranks among one of the largest content streams of any app in the entertainment world. However, no app is perfect, and occasionally even the most well-liked ones lack a feature that should have been there from the beginning. Although users can now create personalized video playlists on YouTube, they are unable to upload unique artwork or playlist thumbnails at this time. However, an APK teardown by a reliable source states that YouTube may acknowledge this problem soon.

In association with AssembleDebug, the people at Android Authority searched YouTube for Android v19.26.33 beta in search of proof of fresh playlist thumbnail customization options. This is a condensed version of the code that was discovered in the APK, which makes explicit reference to the capability of making unique YouTube playlist thumbnails.
As the Android Authority makes clear that a custom thumbnail can be set while uploading a video on the app but not for user-created playlists. Your YouTube playlist uses the thumbnail of the topmost video.
Right now, you can use the Set as playlist thumbnail option (web only) to change the playlist’s thumbnail. Users are limited to selecting a thumbnail from a single video on the playlist, though. You are not going to be able to use an image from your computer or phone to personalize the playlist thumbnail. Thank goodness, that restriction will be fixed with this new functionality.
Additionally, the source discovered a few strings that describe the fundamental operations of this impending feature. You can see the dialog pop-ups that go up when users add a personalized cover image for their video playlist in the image above.

In addition to a message explaining why the image is lower than the permitted size, a standard dialog pops up like Try again, Close, and Upload failed are seen here. We don’t presently have any information on the image sizes or dimensions that this new functionality supports.

Though we now have a good understanding of how this feature will operate, there is still no information regarding when everyone will be able to access it. We believe it’s still a ways off from making it to the stable channel because it’s only been seen in the YouTube beta version thus far.
